How to Embrace Autumn in your Home Decor

We’re nearly a month into Autumn now, with it brings crisp air, golden leaves, and the desire to create a cosy, inviting home. Whether you’re a property investor looking to attract buyers or tenants, or just want to refresh your home, autumn decor can add charm and appeal. At Aben Interiors, we help transform spaces to feel warm, stylish, and welcoming.

Here’s how you can bring autumn into your home with ease.

1. Use Warm, Earthy Colours

Autumn is all about rich, natural tones like deep oranges, soft yellows, and warm browns.

A simple way to Embrace Autumn in your home is to add these natural tones into your accessories. I would avoid anything too permanent here, don’t go painting burnt orange features walls! You’ll find they feel outdated pretty quickly by the time spring comes around.

What you can do is think about cosying up those throws, cushions, lights and flooring (we all love a thick cosy rug!). Think about layering your textures on your soft furnishings, combining warmer textures like wool help create a more cosy feel as well as adding more depth to the room.

2. Add Natural Materials

Bringing nature into your home is a great way to reflect the autumn season. I like to do this all year round, but Autumn is a time where leaning into this aesthetic works particularly well.

Here are some examples:

  • Wooden Details: Incorporate oak or walnut furniture for a timeless look, or add smaller wooden items like picture frames or bowls.
  • Woven Baskets: Use jute or rattan baskets to store throws or as stylish storage. They add texture and function to your space.
  • Seasonal Decor: Create simple displays with pinecones, dried leaves, or small pumpkins. For a touch of luxury, add metallic elements like copper or gold.

In an HMO, this might be reflected in how you stage your rooms, a mixture of wooden chopping boards are great in your kitchen and wooden trays and baskets look great in any room of your HMO.

3. Create Cosy Lighting

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes key to making your home feel warm and inviting. It’s the time of year to lean into the darker evenings and make them a feature in itself.

Think about the ways you can add softer light to those dark evenings with everything from Candles, table and floor lamps to fairy lights! I’d be thinking about switching any bright white or blue light bulbs out for a warmer yellow bulb and experimenting with warm scents in my candles like cinnamon or vanilla.

Adding autumnal scents is a great way to add a good first impression too. Even more important if you are doing viewings on your properties to really start to sell that autumnal dream.

4. Switch to Autumn-Themed Art

Swapping your artwork or prints is an easy way to update your decor to embrace Autumn. It’s a chance to add those autumnal colours in and even have a bit of fun with some more seasonal decor. You might even want to add some halloween themed artwork!

  • Nature-Inspired Art: Look for pieces featuring autumn colours or natural landscapes. These can add a seasonal touch without being overwhelming.
  • Update Your Gallery Wall: If you have a gallery wall, switch out a few pieces for autumn-themed prints. Small changes can make a big impact.
